My 4-year Old’s New Chore
I’ve been thinking so much lately about the need to develop a specific chore routine for the kids. Up until now, it has been mostly random asking the kids to do this or that. Of course they have the normal routine stuff like getting dressed, brushing their teeth, etc.
We have been able to tell from our children’s attitudes that this system isn’t helping them to develop needed independence or responsibility, so this month my husband and I are working to come up with a more structured chore system for them.
Last week I was unloading the dishwasher while my 4-year old, Annie Grace, stood by. She has been a good helper in the kitchen and I was trying to think of how she could help me with the dishes. Most of the cupboards are too high, so I thought she might be able to help me put away the silverware (except the sharp knives, of course).
She was very unsure as she looked at the big pile of forks and spoons on the counter. But as I encouraged her, she was able to sort and put them all away in the right places. She even gave me the big smile you see above!
She felt very big and proud of herself when she was finished. Needless to say, this has become 1 of Annie’s new routine chores and it is a BIG help to me!

My Favorite Place to Get Coupons? The Local Recycling Center!
Annie and I scooted out to the recycling center this afternoon to drop off some of our own recycling and it ended up being a very successful trip. In about 10 minutes I recovered 14 coupon inserts from the paper recycling bin. I’m sure there were alot more in there but my 4-year old was waiting “patiently” for me to finish.
I’ve been able to do this many times now and it has really helped to cut down on the cost of actually buying the Sunday paper. I generally purchase 1 or at the most 2 papers on Sunday and try to get any others from the paper recycling bin.
There hasn’t been one time when there hasn’t been a few inserts in there - whole and uncut! Another plus is that I don’t get all that extra paper that I don’t need.
